Camden is South Carolina’s oldest inland town. It was founded in 1732, after King George II ordered the establishment of a town on the Wateree River.

Its strategic location meant it played an important role in the Revolutionary War, as the British occupied Camden in their effort to subdue the backcountry. Following heavy losses at the Battle of Hobkirk Hill in April 1781, the Redcoats left, burning most of the town.

Today, Camden retains much of its historic charm. Its downtown historic district is home to more than 60 historic buildings. Camden’s Springdale Race Course hosts the Colonial Cup in fall and the Carolina Cup in spring.

Camden has a rich equine history, a by-product of the late 19th century influx of wealthy northerners in town. Horses are such a part of life in Camden that signage reminds horse riders: “Horses Forbidden on Sidewalks.”
