Coquina Harbour — Little River, South Carolina
SC Picture Project | Horry County | Coquina Harbour
This man-made harbor in Little River was dug in the 1960s as a coquina mine. Coquina is a limestone substance composed of shell fragments and used for building material. The quarry later opened to the Intracoastal Waterway. Now used by four marinas, Coquina Harbour (also spelled Coquina Harbor) was deemed too deep by the Environmental Protection Agency and was filled with sand. Today the harbor is 11 feet deep. It is flanked by condominiums and provides a boardwalk to the Governor’s Lighthouse.
Many thanks to Little River resident Charles D. Hatchell for the above photo and much of the information!
