Lemon Island — Okatie, South Carolina
SC Picture Project | Beaufort County | Lemon Island
The Chechessee River in Beaufort County flows beneath the below bridge, taking travelers from the mainland of Okatie to the wetland wilderness of Lemon Island. Once the location of Strawberry Hill Plantation on Hazzard Creek, today just a handful of residents call Lemon Island home. Most of the 500-plus-acre island is under conservation easement, with only four luxury homes standing on the land nestled between the Chechessee and Broad rivers – despite the fact that South Carolina Highway 170 runs through the island.

Reflections on Lemon Island
Contributor Trent Caldwell, who sent the above photo, states: “I was inspired by the shapes and contrasts under the bridge going over the Port Royal Sound – just one of many beautiful spots in Beaufort County. This was taken after taking my nephew to the Port Royal Maritime Center [on the mainland] to learn more about the unique ecosystem of the sound.”
